Cool things to get up to this week (Weekend) on the West Coast
All along the West Coast from Melkbos right up to Lamberts bay there are perfect cosy little bays to relax, unwind, be solitary, capture the beauty, just read a book, sun-tan or go for a refreshing swim. Check out Yzerfontein, Langebaan, Jacobs Bay, Paternoster, St Helena bay , Dwarskersbos, Elands bay or Lamberts bay for authentic and stylish beach going.
The Darling Music Experience is being held from 29 January 2016 till 14 February 2016. Check out this popular assembly of Jazz, Opera, Funk cross-over, country concerts and other , all being infused with a wide range of excellent wines and localized cuisine. (a great stop over indeed)
The Mill Country Fair in Hopefield is a community market and pop-up deli, held every Saturday from 10h00 til 14h00, check it out it’s a great little treat.
This Restaurant located on the main beach in Paternoster needs no real introduction. Situated in a rustic red & green Tin House it has fantastic views all year round, a great menu with a high standard of preparation, casual but efficient service and an overwhelming West Coast laid-back style of socialising. Drinks are available and a good beverage list (Wine & Other) is available to accompany the ambiance and beach atmosphere. This soothing and comforting little Gem can be found at the De Palm Lifestyle centre in St Helena bay. The name means “Peace of Joy” and it is just that, Great tasting coffee, fillings and authentic traditional sweet and savoury recipes are accompanied with the friendly and warm welcoming of Shirley and her team. Be sure to reserve your morning as sitting back here and taking in the surrounding will need more than just an hour – most relaxing and a great place to unwind.
Thali -Thali game lodge is situated just off the R27 (West Coast Road) and caters for guests who want exciting Game drives, accommodation ( Self-catering style), a venue for outdoor functions, a Restaurant & a Safari bar with unique and stylish Lapa. Walk along 16Mile beach, the longest beach in South Africa, which offers tranquillity, solitude, and an opportunity to recharge. It is also ideal for kite-surfers, windsurfers or just to splash in the breakers. Horseback outrides are arranged from Yzerfontein. There are also times of the year when good sightings of sea-life (whales and dolphins) occur as well as good sightings for sea-bird enthusiasts. All one need is a picnic basket, a blanket and family/ friends and a great beach getaway can be had- sunrises and sunsets are exquisite and awe-inspiring.
Since the weather is simply bliss at the moment –why not head up to Paternoster and take in a Sea kayaking experience around the bay and rocky out-crops. Easy to use sea kayaks are available, with an experienced guide accompanying you all the way- you will feel at ease and relaxed with nature all around you. Possible sightings include the ever friendly Penguin’s, cormorants/ other sea birds and the local fishing activities along the long main beach.
This uber-delicious little cosy Pancake/Coffee shop in central Langebaan will have you coming back for more. All confectionary and treats are home-baked/made to order and will satisfy all who visit. Situated next to “Windtown” and behind the Bree street centre on Bree Street you will discover a tiny gem that’s got big delivery on comfort and mouth-watering sweet and savoury meals.
Bokkom Laan (Bokkom –lane) is the home of the traditional Dried & Salted Mullet (Fish) activity, and bunches of fish, strung up to dry can be seen all along the lane. This rare delicacy (Fish Biltong) is unique to this area of the West Coast and every visitor is encouraged to sample a piece. All along this really cool avenue one can find restaurants, Art & Craft outlets and a few National Monuments.
